Now I am officially a member of RSPVH!
I have always wanted to get myself involved in volunteering work and finally my time has come, to fufill my dream, learn new skills and not forgetting to make new friends with fellow volunteers and benes alike.
Let's go!
I was told to report at 9 am in the morning at NTU WSC room. This is considered quite a challenge for me because 1) I am not an early riser and my place is pretty far from NTU and 2) being a freshmen means finding a place in such a huge school can be a daunting task. Nontheless, I reported at the designated venue on time.
Upon reaching, we were split into 4 groups. Throughout the whole day-event, we are to complete station games as a group. At the end of the day, groups will be credited and rewarded based on how fast the tasks were executed, team spirit and team bonding. For starters, our GLs encouraged us to interact with our group mates, sharing stuff about ourselves and our interests. This is to help the team bond which can help us work together better later on in the day.
FIRST HALF BEFORE LUNCH
From morning til noon, teams are to journey around school to complete different station games. Me and my group moved off excitedly. We were guided by our GLs. The station masters were clear about the instructions and very friendly.
LUNCH
OMG I am so hungry. Finally, lunch time is here! We had packed meal aka mixed veg rice. It tasted good...or maybe I am just too hungry hahas. Everyone helped a little to distribute the lunchboxes as well as drinks so that we quickly get things done and dig in! Last but not least, what is a good meal without chatting?!
After filling our stomachs, we are all ready to take on any activity that lies ahead of us.
SECOND HALF AFTER LUNCH
To my surprise, we are playing RUNNING MAN! I am a big fan of the Korea reality game show RUNNING MAN and little did I think that I can take part in "one" myself :D There is a briefing before the game starts. Then, everyone was given a long strip of paper which will later be secure around our wrist. This "wristband" is know to be our "life", once it is ripped off you are out of the game. Similar to the carrying out of RUNNING MAN, teams are to run around campus and complete tasks and preferably FASTER and BETTER than others teams. Members of the other groups can only "rip" when their opponent groups are on the move and not when they are executing tasks. Enough said. Let's get started!
WATER GAMES
Apart from food, getting wet is the best part of a camp. Our seniors brought us to an open field in NIE where the segment will be held. I have never set foot in NIE. After the heart pumping RUNNING MAN, all of us felt really tired but that did not undermine our spirits. Haha this game is such a good time to sabotage my friends!
THE TRADITION-DARK ROOM EXPERIENCE
When my GL told me about this event, I did not know what to expect because afterall I am a sighted person. This activity was held at one of the tutorial rooms. Before we entered the room, we were blindfolded and after which someone will guide us in.
Upon entry, I was told to feel for a string which lead the way from start to finish. During the course, I reached a number of stations where I am asked to use my other senses like hearing, touch and smell to complete tasks. Music was also being played in the background which is actually a bit eerie. This simulation made me learn the challenges faced by the visually impaired which will help in the understanding of my benes and my interaction with them later on in the semester. Also, I comprehend how every single one of our senses is crucial.
Now, can you imagine yourself being visually impaired?
THE TRADITION-DINING IN THE DARK
This segment is also our dinner. We had Subway. Yum yum. Food aside, It was really difficult to eat when you cannot see because you can easily get yourself dirty.
THE DAY ENDS
I made many new awesome friends today and also learnt many new lessons. I am sure many of my peers did too. Hope we can work together to make RSPVH a better place for benes and volunteers alike.
Being visually Impaired is not easy. What if it were you? Will you wish Singapore to be a more gracious society?
