Xepressivour

Through the eyes of or beneficiaries-Siew Ling's blog
Written by Siew Ling on 21.12.2009

Yesterday, I went to the Xpressivour event organised by the RSPVH friends at Toa Payoh Park. There was light drizzle throughout the event. The bus dropped us at Toa Payoh Interchange. From there, we needed to walk a far bit to the park itself.

Many people turned up for the event despite being a Sunday. Everyone like to say this to me, "Siew Ling, do you still remember me? I ever spoken to you." I am bad with names. Even if I remembered their voices, I forgot their names. Haha...

At the park, TL brought me to my group leader for the day - YT. Each of the beneficiaries was given a name tag. I recieved an early Christmas present from my ex-Secondary schoolmate. Thank you LY! Before the actual event started, we did some warming up, things like doing self-introductions to your group members and come up with a cheer. My group was called Music. Every group did their own cheer and it was time to kick start that day's activities.

Station 1: Mystery Box
This station made use of our sense of smell. We were supposed to identify the contents inside a cup. I'm hopeless at this. I think I kept smelling the smell of the cloth. Later on the bus, S agreed with me that the cloth itself also contained some flower scent. Well, lucky for us, we had a few wonderful group members and they correctly identified the smell, getting seven out of the eight right. Fantastic!

Station 2: Dance
In this station, a volunteer was paired with a beneficiary. We had to learn some dance moves. We were supposed to dance in the rhythm of the music. Apparently, all our tempos were different, some slow, some fast. While practising the dance steps, A taught me some other dance moves to a Korean song and English song. A, you watch too much MTV. =P

Station 3: Balloon Sculpturing
The station master taught me to make a simple crown, a sword and a heart. I wore the crown and took the sword and told A I was going to "Knight Her". Haha... Later, I took the sword and drove it into the heart and I declared that I was dead. Crazy me! What nonsense!

Station 4: Let's Fold It
We were each given a square piece of paper. We were supposed to write down our New Year's Resolution for 2010. I told YT and A that I could write on the paper but won't be able to read what I have written. I also told them my handwriting would be very ugly. After I was done writing, YT said she could read everything I had written. Next, we were taught how to fold a fox origami. I decorated my fox by giving a sad smile. When we were done with our "masterpiece", we had to write our names behind it. I wrote it and drew a smiling face this time round. A said I was so contradicting. =P

Making Salad:
Each group was given a few plastic bags containing ingredients for the salad like slices of orange, longan, raisins, corn, lettuce. The bags were emptied into a tray. While stirring the ingredients, I shouted many Chinese sayings meant for Lunar New Year during the "Lao Yu Sheng" on "Ren Ri"! Later, the contents were scooped into plastic cups. ZK said before we started eating it, we should do a "Yum Seng". He asked us to stand but I was too lazy and showed him that we could do it while sitting on the floor.

There are many December babies, three of them. A chocolate mint cake was bought for the birthday celebration. My group won the "Most Enthuiastic". With people like ZK in our group, we are sure to get that prize!

After all that eating, we had a mass finale dance. Everyone danced to their own tempo.

The second last activity was gift exchanging. Because of that, A was called "Cute cute A" by C. Haha... YT gave me a box of corn chips and a card holder. To make this card holder a special one, she added the letters S and L to it.

To end the day's events, we had a group photo-taking session. S sat beside me. I hooked the string on my candy cane on his ear as if it was an ear ring. Well well! He put his own candy cane on the other ear. Sadly, he told he removed them when the photos were taken. Haha...

Finally, we made our way back to the place where the bus dropped us off earlier on in the afternoon.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all my RSPVH friends. =D
