Through the eyes of our beneficiaries-Siew Ling's blog

On Sunday, I went to the Science Centre with my little VH friends and a group of RSPVH friends. Earlier in the morning, I accompanied my mother to the market. Whenever she goes out with me, I will carry the plastic bags which led the owner of a fruit stall at Chinatown to mistake me as the maid. Uncle, do I look like a maid? Why do you speak to my mother in Hokkien but Malay to me ah? After I reached home, I still had another half an hour to get ready. At 11, I left home. There is no bus on Sundays? After more than fifteen minutes, two buses finally stopped in front of me, the second one was the one I was waiting for.
On the ride up to Science Centre, SM gave each of us a piece of bread. I had one with mushroom, potato and cheese. I asked HS if he wanted to try my bread. He kept insisting that he did not want to eat my saliva. I said jokingly that according to some myth, if he ate my saliva, he would be very obedient and listen to me. Hahaha... To prove that he will not eat my saliva, I tore the other corner under the watchful eyes of SM.
At the Science Centre, we were all divided into four groups. Each group was named after a famous scientist, mine was Darwin. We were given the admission ticket and were told what we would be doing. After that, we all walked towards the entrance. About that time, it started to rain. My mother told me that the last time I visited the Science Centre, I was only 5. So long ago! =P
When I went into the gate, the staff gave me a UV stamp slightly below my elbow.
Q: What exam paper do you sit for before the age of 13?
A: PSLE
Primary Science Learning Experience:
We were supposed to join a few gears in such a way that when we move one of them, every gear will also move. Then, we were given 10-15 minutes to look at the exhibits. I tried some of the exhibits like the ones on magnetism and the heat energy.
Q: What travels at the speed of 340m/s?
A: Sound
In this area, we get to learn more about sound. There were more exhibits for us to try. There was a "Singing Bowl", how sound waves travel, changes in pitch, musical notes and many more.
We went into a room to try how loud our voice can go to. Strangely, I thought I am such a loud person but I only got 130 while a few others got 156!
The Climate Change and Bacteria:
Almost all of the exhibits are visual, nothing for me to try on. A few of us went to watch a show to learn more about our sick "Earth". The voice I heard talking according to the description of my volunteer was actually a sheep. He was telling the audience that we human beings are harming Earth by using electricity. Our actions led to severe storms, flooding, global warming. The show ended with the sheep alone on Earth. I don't know how but he fell from the sky screaming. Hahaha...
Q: What is Homosapien?
A: Human Being
When this question was asked, I just blurted out the answer. I think I need to control myself, try not to answer every question. LOL! Before we left, my volunteer and I went into a room to measure the amount of greenhouse gases we released. Not a lot so I don't really harm Earth. Haha...
There were displays of the parts of the human body. An eye, the tongue, the inner and outer ear.
We were required to turn a knob to reach the frequency of 2kHz. Not easy! When I confirmed my answer, I only got 0.912kHz. Hahaha... Many others had frequencies that were all higher than 2kHz.
We were given some bones from a skeleton. We had to fit them back into the mould. I was given the skull, the upper arm and the thigh bone.
Q: What symbol is represented by the value of 3.141592?
A: pi
Yay, enough of Science, now for Maths! We were gathered in front of a map of Singapore. Singapore is divided into five parts - Central, Northern, Northeastern, Eastern, Western and water catchment area. We had to fit the pieces to form the map of Singapore. We had to give the name of a MRT station for the piece we had. I said there was no MRT station for the water catchment and A replied that if there is no MRT station, then say no MRT station lor! Hahaha... I was given the piece for the West and I said Boon Lay.
We then had to solve some Maths questions on fractions. After that, we were free to walk around as usual.
Many abascus were being displayed. I showed some of them how to use it. I was brought into a room that was slanted. Nothing to see inside though.
After that, everyone gathered outside Science Centre. For snacks, we had McChicken. Hahaha... I thought I would be given a piece of chicken. I didn't know McChicken is in fact a burger.
Fibonacci got first while the rest of us had consolation prizes. There were a lot of photo-taking. You guys really love to take pictures ah? Hahaha...
As I was one of the last to go home, the bus auntie offered to fetch P, HS and I right to our house. Thank you, auntie!
Although it was a rainy day, we still enjoyed ourselves. Obvious! We were not outside! LOL!
