RSPVH 8th Anniversary

Through the eyes of our beneficiaries-Siew Ling's blog
Written by Siew Ling on 22.06.2010

Every June, my RSPVH friends will book a chalet for 3D2N. On the second day, they will organise activities for the beneficiaries.

This year, the theme was YOG. The YOG mascot Lyo has gone missing. The RSPVH coordinator has been approached by the YOG committee to ask her VH specialist teams to help find this mascot.

The teams were "James Bond" (Yay! My group), "Nancy Drew", "Sherlock Holmes" and "Scooby Doo".

Station 1: Bowling
We stood on the top of a slope. At the bottom, there were some pins. We were supposed to knock down the pins with a soccer ball. I only managed to knock down seven of the 10 pins on both tries. Strike was just so near! The beneficiaries were supposed to score 50 points. After that, the volunteers were supposed to bowl backwards. XH got Strike on both tries! Amazing job! Like the beneficiaries, they also needed to score 50 points.

Station 2: Make Some Noise
We were going to hear 10 recordings. In each recording, we had to identify which instrument made that note and the correct sequence. There were six instruments - a triangle, a clarinet, a Mu Yu, bells, a tambourine (which I held) and another percussion instrument which I have no idea of its name. It felt like a drumstick. On the fatter end, there are like a few bracelet-like bands. To make a note, you turn the bands. It makes scraping sound. The recordings first started with three instruments then increased to six.

Station 3:

Part 1: Stepping On "Carpets"
We had to walk from the starting point to the ending point. We had to step on newspapers at all time. We had a few pieces of newspapers. First, we step on the first one. We then had to move forward by stepping on the other piece in front of us. The first piece had to be picked up and placed in front of the second piece. The volunteers had to bend down, pick up the paper, bend again to place it in front of the one we were standing on.WL did not bend at all! She picked up the papers with her toes only! Very smart!

Part 2:
We held on a length of string. We had to put the pen attached to the string into a bottle. I'm not exactly sure what to do because I was the very last person in that line so don't know what the others in front were doing.

Station 4: Three-legged Race
The beneficiaries paired up with a volunteer. One of our legs was tied up to the other's leg. We had to walk a distance away to the next stop. To make it more challenging, we had to balance a ping pong on a spoon. We walked to a table some distance away. We had to scoop up Mentos sweets that were covered in a bowl of flour. The volunteers had to put the spoon in their mouths and use the spoon to scoop the sweets. The station master kept telling QR, my partner, that she had scooped up too much flour, very demanding.

Lastly, we walked over to a box located a few metres away. The beneficiaries were supposed to pick out a pair of items from the box. I picked out a pair of Monopoly hotels.

Station 5: Floor Ball
We had to dribble a floor ball using the stick all the way till a point where the station master asked us to stop. From there, we were 1.5m away from the goal. We were supposed to whack the ball towards the goal as if we were playing golf. I used the stick meant for left-handed. My floor ball kept moving away from the stick and I always need people to help re-position the ball.

When we all went back to the chalet for dinner, it started to rain heavily outside. After dinner, there was a little appreciation ceremony for the senior volunteers and prize-giving time. "James Bond" solved the puzzle correctly. Yay! I gave my share of the prize to another VH because I have no need for the stationery.

We celebrated the 8th birthday of RSPVH.

As it was still not yet time to go home, we went back into our respective group and played group game.

"James Bond" was divided into two groups, The VH vs the some of the volunteers. The volunteers were given a word. They were supposed to let us guess that word by describing it. There were some words which they cannot say. The category was all on sports. For the VH group, we were told a word and we were supposed to act it out for the other group to guess. It was real fun. I, being the crazy one, gave lots of weird answers that made everyone laugh. Bull-fighting? Bungee?

For the word "Sailing", no one could guess what XX was acting out. It made him real mad and he was down there grumbling. Hahaha... For the word "Cricket", E said there are two types of living things, one animals and the other ---. Everyone was saying that sports was not a living thing and that the other category was human beings. I told E that the other category was insects and that the word was "Cricket".

And... "Snoring" has never be in the category of "SPORTS"!

At 7, the buses came and we went home.
